Glass isn’t always highly visible in and around a building, which can be dangerous and lead to collisions and injury. Toughened glass can even spontaneously break and, if this happens in a public area or at height, can have devastating consequences. While glazing lets in light and creates a productive and comfortable environment, it also poses many hazards and risks of injury. So, it’s imperative to take the relevant precautions to make sure your glass is visible and safe.

There are regulations about the safety of glass, and the need for it to be seen in commercial buildings. Our safety window solutions can help to eliminate the dangers your glass may present to people in and around your building, and ensure you’re complying with your legal obligations.

Making Glass Seen

As a matter of safety, glass needs to be seen to avoid collisions. Limiting the risk of contact with glazing in and around your building reduces the chance of injury and ensures you’re compliant with regulations. We fully understand the rules around glass safety and visibility, so we can help to make sure your glazing complies with your legal obligations.

You can easily, and effectively, improve the visibility of any glass with simple patterned manifestation film. From subtle dots to complex graphics, window film offers a cost-effective way to creatively improve the aesthetics of your building, while ensuring the safety of your people.

Our manifestation window film is quick and easy to install on your existing glass, with no disruption to your people or your day-to-day business.

Regulations

There are regulations about the safety of glass, and the need for it to be seen in commercial buildings. Regulation 14 imposes, on those responsible, a duty to undertake a risk assessment of glazing in critical locations. We have a comprehensive understanding of your legal requirements and can advise you on the best way to comply and demonstrate a duty of care.

Regulation 14

Every window or other transparent or translucent surface in a wall or partition and every transparent or translucent surface in a door or gate shall, where necessary for reasons of health and safety:

  1. be of safety material or be protected against breakage of the transparent or translucent material;
  2. be appropriately marked or incorporate features so as, in either case, to make it apparent.

Regulation 14 applies to commercial and public-sector buildings, schools and education, duty holders, directors, managers or headmasters, if there is no risk assessment of the glass, or no permanent record of glass types or improvements.

At WindowTreat we’ll help you through every step. From adhering to legislation, to demonstrating you’ve taken appropriate steps to minimise the risks. With our window film solutions you can easily upgrade existing glazing that doesn’t comply and instantly improve the safety and visibility of any glass.

Glass Audit

Ensuring your glazing complies with legislation is essential, but doesn’t need to be time consuming. We can do a full risk assessment of your building and provide you with a report on any areas of non-compliance, as well as advise you on the best solutions to put in place so your glass adheres with regulations.

During our glass audit, we’ll inspect your existing glazing and record details including the type of glass, risk code and the size of pane. We’ll then document this, in what will be your ‘living document’. We’ll assess whether your glazing is fit for purpose and compliant with regulations, identify any areas of risk and present a plan to mitigate them.

As health and safety regulations change, it’s important to carry out regular glass audits to ensure your glazing remains compliant. And if you change the use of an area of your building, it’s worth making sure the minimum glazing standards still apply. We can carry out a glass audit at a time to suit you, with minimum disruption to your business activities or the people within your building.

Spontaneous breakage

Sometimes, small impurities find their way into toughened glass during manufacturing, increasing the internal stresses in the glazing. When the stress exceeds the strength of the glass, it can break. In any circumstances, this can have devastating effects, but particularly where glass is installed at height or in public spaces.

By applying our safety window film to existing toughened glass you can increase your glazing’s resistance to impact and pressure. With high tensile strength, our safety window films and edge retention systems hold broken fragments of glass within the frame until you can get it replaced, preventing it from falling and reducing the risk of injury.
